We strive to provide the highest level of service to the residents of San Miguel County by valuing our volunteers and dedicating ourselves to excellence.

The San Miguel County Volunteer Fire District’s provides all Risk Services to the unincorporated areas of San Miguel County. The Volunteers are dedicated to providing the highest level of FIRE/EMS Response Service possible to the resident’s that includes a wide variety of services to an ever expanding and diverse population. These services include fire suppression, hazardous materials mitigation, Emergency Medical Services, rural search and rescue and fire prevention. We continually strive for ways to better improve our services and meet the specialized needs of our residents with the following volunteers, equipment and stations:

  • There are currently 12 active Fire District’s with one in the preplanning stage. There are 10 active stations with 2 more in the pre-building stage.
  • There are 4 active sub-stations with 10more in the various planning stages.There are approximately 300 volunteers working in various positions of the departments.
  • There are 60 fire fighting units and 6 rescue units located within the 12 departments.
  • Our primary response is to wild land fires that comprise approximately 90% of our fire calls. Our EMS units respond to automobile accidents along Interstate 25 within the county and emergency 911 Calls in rural areas of the county.
  • The population of the county is approximately 28,000 and growing.
  • The fire departments serve an area of approximately 5,000 square miles.
