Mission Statement:

To serve in the best interest of the public’s health, safety and general welfare of the residents within the unincorporated areas of San Miguel County by assuring for the orderly, harmonious and planned development of the lands.

Roles and Objectives:

  • Land Use Planning – To protect and enhance our quality of life by guiding land use and development.
  • Code enforcement – To enforce the land use, litter and solid waste ordinance of the County.
  • Floodplain Development - To enforce floodplain development regulations.
  • Zoning Development Permits - Administering development regulations.

Service and Goals:

  • Land Use Planning: To protect and enhance the quality of life by guiding land use and development.
  • Subdivision Applications: Process applications for subdivisions and ensures that the New Mexico Subdivision Act and County Subdivision Ordinance are followed accordingly.
  • Code Enforcement: To ensure that the various land use ordinances of San Miguel County are adhered to.
  • Zoning Development Permits: To issue zoning development permits for all new construction, remodeling, renovation and expansion of buildings and structures.
  • Claim of Exemptions: To ensure that divisions of land comply with the provisions of the New Mexico Subdivision Act and San Miguel County Subdivision Ordinance.
  • Business License Registration: Issues yearly business license registrations as provided under County Business License Ordinance.

San Miguel County Planning and Zoning issues approximately:

  • 165 zoning development permits per year
  • 80 claim of exemption applications per year.
  • 570 business license registrations per year.
